Growth rates of minor-closed classes of matroids

For a minor-closed class M of matroids, we let h(k) denote the maximum number of elements of a simple rank-k matroid in M. We prove that, if M does not contain all simple rank-2 matroids, then h(k) grows either linearly, quadratically, or exponentially.

Structure in minor-closed classes of matroids

This paper gives an informal introduction to structure theory for minorclosed classes of matroids representable over a fixed finite field. The early sections describe some historical results that give evidence that well-defined structure exists for members of such classes. In later sections we describe the fundamental classes and other features that necessarily appear in structure theory for mi...

The Highly Connected Matroids in Minor-closed Classes

For any minor-closed class of matroids over a fixed finite field, we state an exact structural characterization for the sufficiently connected matroids in the class. We also state a number of conjectures that might be approachable using the structural characterization. This paper is dedicated to James Oxley on the occasion of his 60th Birthday.

On Growth Rates of Closed Permutation Classes

A class of permutations Π is called closed if π ⊂ σ ∈ Π implies π ∈ Π, where the relation ⊂ is the natural containment of permutations. Let Πn be the set of all permutations of 1, 2, . . . , n belonging to Π. We investigate the counting functions n 7→ |Πn| of closed classes. Our main result says that if |Πn| < 2n−1 for at least one n ≥ 1, then there is a unique k ≥ 1 such that Fn,k ≤ |Πn| ≤ Fn,...

On the growth rate of minor-closed classes of graphs

A minor-closed class of graphs is a set of labelled graphs which is closed under isomorphism and under taking minors. For a minor-closed class G, we let gn be the number of graphs in G which have n vertices. A recent result of Norine et al. [12] shows that for all minor-closed class G, there is a constant c such that gn ≤ c nn!. Our main results show that the growth rate of gn is far from arbit...
